Nucleation in a Fermi liquid at negative pressure

چکیده
Experimental investigation of cavitation in liquid helium 3 has revealed a singular behaviour in the degenerate region at low temperature. As the temperature decreases below 80mK, the cavitation pressure becomes significantly more negative. To investigate this, we have extrapolated the Fermi parameters in the negative pressure region. This allowed us to calculate the zero sound velocity, which we found to remain finite at the spinodal limit where the first sound velocity vanishes. We discuss the impact on the nucleation of the gas phase in terms of a quantum stiffness of the Fermi liquid. As a result we predict a cavitation pressure which is nearer to the spinodal line than previously thought.

Investigation of Cavitation in Glass- Forming Liquids
In an effort to better understand the source of toughness in metallic glass, we have investigated cavitation in glass-forming liquids. When subjected to negative hydrostatic pressure, a liquid will reduce its energy through the formation of a cavity. This phenomenon is the competing process to shear band growth and the development of a large plastic zone, which we have identified as the crucial...
متن کاملHomogeneous nucleation at high supersaturation and heterogeneous nucleation on microscopic wettable particles: A hybrid thermodynamic/density-functional theory.
Homogeneous nucleation at high supersaturation of vapor and heterogeneous nucleation on microscopic wettable particles are studied on the basis of Lennard-Jones model system. A hybrid classical thermodynamics and density-functional theory (DFT) approach is undertaken to treat the nucleation problems. Local-density approximation and weighted-density approximation are employed within the framewor...
متن کاملCavitation of water by volume-controlled stretching
A liquid subjected to negative pressure is thermodynamicallymetastable. Confinedwithin a small volume, negative pressure can build up until cavities form spontaneously. The critical negative pressure for cavitation in water has been theoretically predicted to be in the range of −100 to −200 MPa at room temperature, whereas values around−30MPahave been obtainedbymany experiments. The discrepancy ...
متن کاملRelaxation and Thermal Conductivity of Hot and Thermal Quasiparticles and Fermi Liquid Interactions in d-wave Superconductors
In this paper, we calculate theoretically the relaxation rates of hot, thermal and antinodal quasiparticles by using Fermi’s golden rule. The transition probabilities at low temperatures express in terms of Bogoliubov coefficients, singlet and triplet scattering amplitudes and dimensionless Landau parameters. The values of Landau parameters may be determined by comparison with the experimental ...
متن کاملExploration of the phase diagram of liquid water in the low-temperature metastable region using synthetic fluid inclusions.
We present new experimental data of the low-temperature metastable region of liquid water derived from high-density synthetic fluid inclusions (996-916 kg m-3) in quartz. Microthermometric measurements include: (i) prograde (upon heating) and retrograde (upon cooling) liquid-vapour homogenisation. We used single ultrashort laser pulses to stimulate vapour bubble nucleation in initially monophas...
